THIRTEEN
The amazing Lord Count
Alpheus peered about, looking for a quick way to get down. Having watched everything pan out from the start, he didnât want to miss what was next. In the end, he resorted to taking the stairs, racing down as fast as he could.
When he finally reached the ground, he was panting, but he was glad to realise that everyone was still at a standstill. Breunor had tensed up, cringing slightly even. Forredan winced. It was apparent that they didnât like Reeling. But it also looked like they feared Reeling, who seemed to be radiating an air that melted othersâan air that oozed confidence and fearlessnessâa quality Alpheus had never really paid much heed to in the past.
Walford Bors had retrieved his maul. He looked shocked, probably still wondering how it had happened. He wouldnât want it to be the focus, though. Indeed, the giant man said no word as he returned behind Breunor.
âLord Count,â Breunor finally greeted, wearing a forced smile. âThat was quite an entrance. Youâre not here only to surprise us, are you?â
Reeling grinned at him. âThat would depend on what youâre doing.â
âLord Breunor was here to see Sir Sagramore,â Forredan answered for the military man. âAnd Iâm here to take Julian Roland... or was it Longinus? I donât know. Either way, the boy is mine.â
Julian was still shivering from his near-death experience. Alpheus trotted toward him, helping him to his feet, and helping appease his terror.
âWho in Godâs name are you?â Forredan questioned, wincing at Alpheus, but pausing soon after his own question. The stout statesman seemed to have noted the chrome-plated pocket watch dangling at his girdle, which was the token that proved he was a State Scholar.
âYou again,â Breunor said, apparently recognising Alpheus from their single encounter in this very building. âYou damned scholar... how dare you poke your head in our affairs!â
Alpheus pouted, still panting. âI have not the slightest interest in your affairs. But if you were to torment him, youâd have me to ask.â
Julian glanced up at Alpheus in spite of his exhaustion.
Reeling clapped his hands in applause, regarding Alpheus with pride.
âLord Count,â Breunor said with a huff. âI have duties to perform, and I would appreciate it if you didnât interfere.â
âAnd I am here to perform my duties as Count,â Reeling claimed. âI am surveying potential candidates for the Golden Knight Exchange. And with the Empireâs blessing, Iâm delighted to say that I have found one today.â Reeling regarded Julian now, who gawked back. âI want to see Julian Longinus at the Exchange.â
The crowd exchanged stupefied looks. Even Julian himself was taken aback.
âNot so fast!â Breunor cried, raising a hand. âThe boyâs guilty of treason.â
âI do not believe he is,â Reeling said, shaking his head. âAsk your advisor. I believe his name was Nelson.â
Breunor grunted and then turned to his retinue, eyeing the only man who wasnât of the fighter class. The aged Nelson was probably an advisor to Breunor for on-court matters. But this aged man didnât look his best now.
